Symbolism
The trident and shark allude to the original unit emblem of Port Security Unit 309 and recall the formative years when Coast Guard Reserve personnel were trained for rapid deployment to protect vital U.S. shipping in foreign ports. The pheon, traditionally used to mark government property, alludes to PSU 309s mission to protect critical supplies needed by U.S. Forces. The pheon is colored red to represent strength and the ability to support operations ashore. The laurel wreath is a symbol of honor, and here it represents the numerous Coast Guard Meritorious Unit Commendations awarded to PSU 309 for their service during military operations in the Middle East and their commitment to the Coast Guard motto, Semper Paratus (Always Ready). The shield denotes this as a U.S. Coast Guard unit and is similar to the one worn on a Coast Guardsmans dress uniform. The motto, a Latin phrase for DEEDS NOT WORDS, is sacred to the members of PSU 309 and represents the proud heritage of the United States Coast Guard. The buff colored background edged in light blue symbolizes the PSUs mission within the littorals--both ashore and afloat.

Seal
The coat of arms in full color as in the blazon, all upon a Buff background edged Light Blue and enclosed within a Dark Blue designation band edged Buff, within a Gold rope border the name USCG PORT SECURITY UNIT at top and 309 in base in White.
